Stranger Than Fiction

Movie Title : Stranger Than Fiction
Directors :  Marc Forster
Starring : Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, Emma Thompson
Genre : Comedy/Drama/Fantasy/Romance
Year of Release : 2006
Movie Length : 113 minutes
My rating - A+(best)~F-(worst) : A
Short description/summary of the movie :
Karen Effiel is an author writing her latest novel about an isolated man named Harold Crick. What she doesn't know is that her fictionalized character is real. The real Harold Crick is an IRS agent who has lived a dull existence and one day begins to hear Karen's voice as she narrates what she puts on paper to what Harold has and is doing. Because of this Harold enlists the help of a literary professor to find out what is happening and ends up changing things about his life including beginning a relationship with his IRS client, a government-hating bakery owner named Ana Pascal. Harold, however, finds trouble when he hears that Karen plans to kill him

My Thoughts : I actually loved this movie! I usually can't stand Will Ferrell, esp in his slapstick comedies, but he was great here. The story was good and the ending went well with the whole plot. I love Latifah and Maggie too so that was a plus.

Movie Title : Crumb
Directors : Terry Zwigoff
Starring : The Crumbs!
Genre : Documentary
Year of Release : 1994
Movie Length : 119 minutes
My rating - A+(best)~F-(worst) : A
Short description/summary of the movie :
This movie chronicles the life and times of R. Crumb. Robert Crumb is the cartoonist/artist who drew Keep On Truckin', Fritz the Cat, and played a major pioneering role in the genesis of underground comix. Through interviews with his mother, two brothers, wife, and ex-girlfriends, as well as selections from his vast quantity of graphic art, we are treated to a darkly comic ride through one man's subconscious mind. As stream-of-consciousness images incessantly flow forth from the tip of his pen, biting social satire is revealed, often along with a disturbing and haunting vision of Crumb's own betes noires and inadequacies. As his acid-trip induced images flicker across our own retinas, we gain a little insight into this complex and highly creative individual.

My Thoughts : Maaaaan, this is one weird family. I like Crumb's work, but never really knew how um...disturbed he was (he had a sexual obsession with Bugs Bunny). Great documentary though. Would recommend!

Movie Title : Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Directors : Tim Burton
Starring : Johnny Depp (Willy Wonka), Freddie Highmore (Charlie Bucket), Deep Roy (Oompa Loompa)
Genre : Adventure / Family
Year of Release : 2005
Movie Length : 115 minutes
My rating - A+(best)~F-(worst) : A
Short description/summary of the movie : (from imdb.com)
Charlie Bucket is a young boy who comes from a poor but loving family and would love nothing more than to find a golden ticket to enter the amazing chocolate factory run by inventor and owner Willy Wonka. As luck would have it, Charlie finds the last golden ticket and goes on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure with his grandpa Joe. Among the other four winners are Veruca Salt, a spoiled rich girl; Augustus Gloop, a gluttonous kid who stuffs his face with sweets; Violet Beuragarde, a champion trophy gum chewer; and Mike Teavee, a kid who spends more time watching TV and playing video games than anything else. Most fascinating is the mysterious Willy Wonka who in turn had a troubled childhood and has a special grand prize at the end for one of the kids. Also along the tour are Wonka's staff the singing, working Oommpa Loompas.

My Thoughts : Cute. I watched it with Ciara (who will be 3 in May) and she ended up having to watch it at least 5 times in the week we had it. The songs were super catchy, there was humor for adults (kids wouldn't / shouldn't get it) so I think all around it was a great family movie. Johnny Depp, as much as I don't like him, was *excellent* in the role of Willy Wonka.

My rating - A+(best)~F-(worst) : A+
Short description/summary of the movie : The adventures of the Lafayette Escadrille, young Americans who volunteered for the French military before the U.S. entered World War I, and became the country's first fighter pilots.
My Thoughts : The only thing I didn't like about the movie wasn't any fault of the directors or writers, since it was a true story. Hence the A+. I LOVED this movie. It was a lot of fun to watch and wasn't cheesy. Plus, you get James Franco. In uniform. There is a god!!

#22 True Grit

Movie Title : True Grit
Directors : Henry Hathaway

My rating - A+(best)~F-(worst) : A
Short description/summary of the movie : This girl's dad gets killed by this dirtbag, so she hires the U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn and a Texas Ranger to bring her father's murderer to justice
My Thoughts : This plot was pretty good. Rooster Cogburn is a good character and the story is good. There were a couple of really good lines in this movie too. I also liked how the girl wasn't a damsel in distress type typical of the time period too. She actually had some guts.
